Checking In: Mountain Lake Lodge

While the scenery was beautiful and I loved the 7 mile drive up the top of the mountain to reach Mountain Lake Lodge, I don’t think we were exactly the target audience. If you’re traveling with a large party or want a holiday to keep the kids busy then this is your place, the list of activities was a least a page long – and that was just for the one week! Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to check out the recreational side of the lodge so my impression is based solely on the actual grounds and room itself.

Let’s start with the grounds – they were beautiful, the trails and walkways surrounding the main building was worth the trip in my opinion. Also if you have a thing for Dirty Dancing then this is definitely the place for you, it’s the original filming site for some of the movie and of course a little “museum” (read shrine) to the movie is located on site.

So why wasn’t this place for us if it’s so beautiful and outdoorsy – which is what we were looking for? Well it’s simple – the rooms have no air conditioning. Normally, this wouldn’t be a huge deal breaker but when you’ve just been hiking 4 miles in 98 degree heat you want to have a cool room to go back to, especially with a dog who hasn’t stopped panting. The front desk was able to bring us a few fans when I expressed my concerns but that still only got the room down to a warm 80 degrees.

Like I said earlier we were not their target audience – family vacation with kids, cousin bonding, etc – then this is your ideal retreat; then again if you’re like us and looking for a romantic getaway tucked away in the mountains, this might not be the best of plans (unless you’re a big Dirty Dancing fan that is).
