You may have seen the movie of the same name, with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, released in 2011 about two best friends Emma and Dexter. No matter, still read the book by David Nicholl’s! (and see the film because it’s amazing, and quickly became one of my favorites)
If you’ve seen the movie you know the basic plot of Emma and Dexter’s friendship and the ups and downs that is their lives but what you can’t get from the movie is the wonderful writing. The words are so beautiful and so perfect, they describe everything you feel when you’re in one of these emotional relationships with a friend. Throughout the book and film I could only remember a classic line from When Harry Met Sally, (1989) “men and women can’t be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.” Needless to say, this is true for even Emma and Dexter.
The style of the book is what really got me, it focuses on the same day every year, the day they meet, for 10 years and through that day they retell their friendship and lives to the reader in the more beautiful way possible. I’ve recommended this book to everyone I know and then I make them watch the movie with me afterwards because I love seeing their reactions…because even when you know what’s going to happen, there’s always a surprise.
An absolute must read, especially when you’re in your 20s and graduating college just like the characters when you first met them, you can really connect to them and they might just teach you a two or so things about friendship, love, and life.
